We are a group of high school students who want to provide health resources and education to low-income communities. After recently starting internships at Urban League in Hartford, CT, we have become aware of the health disparities in the area. We hope through this organization, we can achieve our mission to ultimately promote health and well-being for all individuals.
I am currently a junior at Avon High School in Avon, CT. I am a cofounder of GHF, and have enjoyed educating all ages on proper nutrition. I hope to continue to learn and teach others about healthy eating, which is often intertwined with the aeroponic gardens at Urban League. The aeroponic gardens are a special touch Urban League has to enhance the production of fresh vegetables for the community. In addition, I have learned the correct daily servings for all types of foods. Through GHF, I hope to help fund healthy eating habits for all ages, and make a positive impact on the community.
I am a senior at Suffield Academy in Suffield, CT. As a co-founder of GHF, I have enjoyed working to give back to the community that needs it the most. Learning about food insecurity in the Hartford community has motivated me to serve and help combat this challenge. When I first started volunteering through Urban League, I didn't realize how much of an impact food insecurity had on the Hartford community but, through our organization we have been lucky enough to provide residents with several fresh foods from the seeds provided from our profits.
I am in 11th grade at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, CT. I have mostly worked on creating and updating our website. I am passionate about Climate Change and environmental sustainability, and how current environmental issues impact our communities, food systems, and nutrition. The intersection between these ideas is especially prevalent in inner-city areas like Hartford where fresh produce is more scarce. The work that Growing Healthy Futures does with Urban League is helping to create a more sustainable and healthy food culture in the local community in Hartford, CT.
